Links

Every kaiju site used to have a recommendations page like this. I'm forgoing the cool banners, but figured I should continue that tradition.

Active Sites:
  • AkiraIfukube.org – Official English site of the legendary composer.
  • Club Tokyo – Kaiju toy database.
  • The Good, The Bad, and Godzilla – Blog of genre historian August Ragone.
  • Gormaru Island – Facebook page noted for its lightning-fast news reports, particularly when it comes to set photos.
  • Greatest Mazinger Hobby Room – Japanese blog with a staggering number of behind-the-scenes images.
  • Kaijucast – A standout kaiju podcast, focusing on monthly discussions of each kaiju film. Hosted by Kyle Yount.
  • KaijuSamurai - deviantART page of artist Matt Frank.
  • Kaijusaurus Podcast – A lifelong Godzilla fan and a neophyte review each film in the series. On its final episode.
  • Maser Patrol – Weekly news roundups, manga translations, and some truly deep cuts of kaiju history.
  • Monster Zero Forums – Actually SciFi Japan’s forums, retaining the site’s old name. Activity is fairly low, but with topics going back to 2004, it’s a valuable resource.
  • Official Godzilla site... er, store
  • Official Godzilla anime trilogy site
  • Toho Kingdom – The last of the big Godzilla fansites still active. Focuses only on films released and distributed by Toho, though its exhaustive coverage of them is admirable. The forums should be approached with caution, though the Comprehensive Guide to Toho’s English Versions topic belongs in your bookmarks.
  • SciFi Japan – Press releases, early reviews, and occasional in-depth analytical/historical articles.
  • Vantage Point Interviews – Collection of interviews conducted by Brett Homenick, many of which pertain to kaiju and tokusatsu.
  • Wikizilla – A wiki for Godzilla, Gamera, Kong, and any kaiju that falls outside the scope of other active wikis. Forget what you remember about it; it’s on the rebound in a big way. Oh, and feel free to make an account and help up out. (Full disclosure: I’m on the staff.)

 Fanzines:
  • Famous Monsters of Filmland – Created by Forest J. Ackerman and James Warren in 1958. “The world’s first monster magazine,” though not devoted exclusively to kaiju by a long shot, has nonetheless been a massive influence on the fandom.
  • G-Fan – Created by J.D. Lees in 1993. At 118 issues and counting, it is by far the most prolific kaiju fanzine. The provides a list of articles in each issue, the ability to order select back issues, and information about G-Fest, the annual Chicago-area convention which started as a meetup of G-Fan contributors.
  • Kaiju Fan Online – Direct G-Fan competitor created by John Rocco Roberto in 1996. Contains many articles originally published in the hard-to-find print magazine.
  • For a complete list, see the page on Wikizilla.
